Anorexia Nervosa - Anorexia - what it is and what you can do about it
After hospital stays and in-patient rehab, this young woman's life is back on track
On 10 July 2006, we received the following story from A.D. in Boston, MA, concerning her battle with anorexia.
"I was diagnosed with anorexia back in November 2004. My mom brought me to see a doctor who specialized in eating disorders. Well, she did an exam on me: weight, blood pressure, heart rate. It turns out I need to be admitted to the hospital for medical attention. My heart rate was down to 32.  I was dehydrated and, of course, my weight was down. I spent two weeks in the hospital and eventually went into a partial program where I got to work with doctors and therapists.

After seven weeks, they thought it was time for me to get discharged completely and try things on my own. I was still seeing a doctor once a week.

In my mind, I wasn't better.  I knew I wasn't ready, I just wanted to get out of there and go back to not eating, and lose the weight they had made me gain. So, I went back into the hospital four more times after that. Enough was enough...

I got checked into a rehab clinic specializing in treating eating disorders. I met women who had eating disorders almost half their lives. It got me thinking that I don't want to spend my whole life living like this, so I decided to get serious about treatment.

After spending three weeks living there, I got out and tried things on my own.  I'm still working with my doctors on a weekly basis. Thankfully, I am now staying out of the hospital and living a better life."

Editor's Comment: We thank this young woman for sharing her heartfelt story with our readers. We strongly urge other anorexics to speak with an adult in their life to help them get them help they need.
