On 29 April 2005, we received the following story from E.C. of Crest Hill, IL:
"First, let me say that I really love your website. I visit it at least three times a week for recipes or nutritional information.
I am a 25-year old mother of a 3-year old boy. At the age of 23, I weighed 515 pounds standing 5'10" tall. The story behind my weight gain isn't a pretty one, nor is it a short one. Without going into long detail, I will say that it was a combination of a thyroid problem, eating disorder, and emotional trauma when I was younger that caused me to gain so much weight.
By the time I was 23, I had a little boy who was barely a year-and-a-half old. I couldn't keep up with him. It was in February of 2003 when I began attending my gastric bypass classes at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
After months of physical and psychological testing and classes, I was finally approved by Medicaid (a hard thing to do) for the operation. I had my operation on October 23, 2003. I am a member of a wonderful gym for women only. I make it a point to go at least three days a week. Along with the gym, eating better and walking every day has helped me get to where I am today.
It is now about a year-and-a-half after the operation and I am currently down to 270 pounds. I was fortunate not to have any problems after my operation and it has turned out to be the best decision I have ever made in my life. Although I have lost 245 pounds, I am hoping to get down to 200 in the very near future.
Thank you for letting me share a little bit of my story!"
Thank you E.C. for sharing your story.
