| Duodenal Switch |
This is one of the most complex of the weight loss surgeries, but is also the most successful for achieving optimum weight loss in severely obese (100 pounds or more) patients.
The procedure can be performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) or by standard (open surgery) operation. During the procedure, the digestive system is diverted allowing only the last 75-100 cm of the tract to digest and absorb nutrients and fats.
The problem with the procedure is that it creates a malabsorptive state meaning the body can no longer adequately absorb proteins, fats, and other nutrients. Most of the problems can be managed with supplements. However, protein malabsorption must be monitored for the remainder of the patient's life to ensure that complications from the condition do not pose serious health risks.
Editor's Note:
Most people spend more time selecting a mechanic for their car repairs than in reviewing a surgeon before having surgery.
If you are seriously considering weight loss surgery, get as much information as you can about the procedure, the complications, the success and failures for the procedure, and, most importantly, about your surgeon's credentials.
Any legitimate doctor will not resent open, honest questions before you allow them to perform surgery.
Don't forget to get a second opinion before scheduling any surgery.
