Kung fu is a great form of conditioning.
Kung fu is appropriate for young and old, male and female. You can begin at nearly any fitness level and begin to improve your overall conditioning, cardiovascular health, toning, flexibility, and even lose weight.

Check your phone book to find local kung fu studios near you. Most colleges and universities also offer kung fu classes, so don't forget to check there, too.

Kung Fu - What it is. What you do. How you benefit.
On 26 April 2004, we received the following story from T.S. from Johnson City, TN, concerning her success using kung fu to get in shape and lose weight.

"I began my kung fu journey on August 11, 2003. In the past eight months, I have seen a significant increase in stamina, flexibility, strength, muscle tone, and overall health.

I needed to lose weight when I started. I was a 5'5" female carrying 186 pounds. I carried the weight pretty evenly and wore a comfortable size 16. However, I am a terrible dieter and just decided to cut back on portion sizes and be conscious of what I was eating.

I will not lie to you. After my first lesson, I literally thought I was going to die. I could barely do 10 push ups and the 30 sit-ups required in the beginner's class, not to mention the stances, punching, and kicking. It was the most intense workout I had ever experienced. I had tried lots of workouts--Jazzercise, aerobics, TaeBo, treadmills, steppers, etc. But I was determined not to let it get me down. So, I went back, and I have not missed a week of classes in 8 months.

I have lost a total of 16 pounds, but have gained so much more muscle. I have lost 4 inches from my waist (now 31-1/2), 2 inches off each arm, 2 inches off each thigh, and 6 inches from my hips! I can now wear a 10/12!

My goal is to get into a size 8 by my next birthday, which is in January, be able to do 50 push ups in one minute, and I should reach brown sash by that time, too!

Kung fu has changed my life.  And to my master and to this art I will be forever grateful!"

Thank you T.S. for sharing your story with our visitors. We wish you continuing success with your goals.

On 14 July 2004, we received an update from T.S.:

"I have an update for you. Since April I have lost another 8 pounds, so that is 24 in all. I have also lost 1 more inch from my waist bringing it to 30-1/2. I have increased pushups to 30 in a minute and am very pleased with the additional muscle. My biceps have gone down from an overall of 14-1/2 to 12. My thighs have stayed constant at 22" but seem more firm.

I am thinking of starting the South Beach Diet so that I can reach my goal weight a little easier. I am still attending classes three days a week for an hour, and I recently ranked up. Things are going well and I am very happy because my one-year kung fu anniversary is coming up in three weeks.

Thanks again for your support."
