Kung fu works for men and women, young and old. Just get started... you never know!
Kung fu is a great method of overall conditioning.  It improves flexibility and muscle tone. It raises your metabolism. It can help you lose or maintain your weight. But, the best aspect, is it also provides you with a lifelong ability to protect yourself if you need to.

Check with your local college or university to see if they offer kung fu classes. Many do!

Kung Fu - What it is. What you do. How you benefit.
Kung fu is a Chinese form of martial arts that was developed as a secret combat style in China. It is an ancient form of mind and body conditioning that also provides the practitioner with an effective means of self-defense.

Kung fu stresses fast and powerful stance transition combined with smashing-swing fists, punches, animal strikes, kicks, grabs, and throws. The footwork and kicking techniques develop the lower body, while the overpowering hand techniques develop the upper body. Overall, kung fu is an excellent workout that provides total body conditioning.

Kung fu also involves techniques similar to wrestling including throws, grabs, and grappling. These moves develop strong upper body muscles and maintain flexibility. The intensity of the workout is always contingent upon the ability you develop as you learn the various techniques.

As with most exercise or fitness programs, kung fu comes in a wide variety of styles and types. Most studios practice a single form that was derived from a particular "master." Every form brings with it variances in its philosophy and history. Almost every studio teaches philosophy and history with the actual physical end of kung fu. You can visit local studios in your area to discuss the various forms of kung fu available to you.

Kung fu is a mental and physical conditioning lifestyle. Coordination, strength, stamina, and mental well-being can be obtained by practicing kung fu. While it is more difficult for people who are grossly overweight or severely out of shape, many studios will start you slowly anyway. During that time, you can begin a weight loss program to trim down and begin practicing stretching exercises and calesthenics to increase your flexibility and endurance.
