You can skip the bourbon in this recipe, if you prefer. Just substitute 1 tsp of almond or vanilla extract to keep the flavor rich.

You can substitute chopped walnuts for the pecans.

Moroccan Spice Bars
Ingredients
(12 servings - 250 calories per serving)
1/2 cup butter
1-1/4 cups brown sugar (lightly packed)
2 large eggs
2 tbsp bourbon
2 squares unsweetened baking chocolate (melted)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1 tbsp powdered sugar (optional)
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Spray 8x8-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  • In large mixing bowl, beat together butter and sugar until creamy.
  • Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.
  • Stir in bourbon and melted chocolate.
  • Mix until creamy and well-blended.
  • In separate mixing bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, and pecans.
  • Mix until well-blended.
  • Add flour mixture to butter mixture.
  • Mix until well-blended.
  • Pour batter into prepared baking pan.
  • Place on center rack of oven.
  • Bake for 25 minutes.
  • Cool cake completely before cutting.
  • Cut into 12 bars.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
