Fitness clubs work for some. If that concept doesn't work for you, try walking alone or with a friend, or working out at home.
Serious exercise for 20-30 minutes per day improves cardiovascular health, tones the body, helps build new muscle, raises your metabolism, and firms up skin as you lose weight.

If you don't like fitness clubs, try walking alone or with a friend, or pick up an exercise video and workout at home. You don't have to spend money to get in shape. If your budget won't allow it, skip the gym and just get moving.

Consider your local community centers when looking for workout classes. Many centers offer all kinds of classes including martial arts, aerobics, and even swimming. YMCAs are still a great place to workout. Check with your local college or university to see if health club passes are available to non-students - they are in many locations for very small yearly fees.

Low calorie diets - they mean reduced calories, not starvation
A Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Success Story
On 25 January 2004, we received the following story from AH:

"I finally realized that cutting calories and exercising is the only true way to lose weight. I don't weigh that much to begin with. I average, and look good, at 125 pounds. I am a 5'4" woman. I had a lot of stress in my life--a move, a new job. During that time, I gained a dreaded ten pounds.

I didn't look that bad, but I couldn't fit into my clothes anymore. I hated thinking about spending all that money on buying new clothes. I found the energy to diet.

It hasn't been that long that I have been on it--maybe two weeks tops. I have cut out regular soft drinks entirely. I could drink four Cokes a day easily. I am also watching my calories and portions. I could easily eat five servings of pasta! It is amazing to see what a serving size actually is!

I binge one day a week to keep it interesting. For example, I went to the gym and walked at least two miles every day uphill on the treadmill during my lunch break (five days/20 minutes per day). I kept my calories under 1,000 per day. On Saturday, I hit Arby's and got a roast beef sandwich, curly fries, and a diet soda. Sundays, I feel guilty about it, and get back on the diet again. It keeps me thinking about what I'm going to eat that next Saturday and gives me something to look forward to.

So, I'm down five pounds already. I typically have no will power. Getting to the gym gives me energy that I have never had before.  It also makes me feel good to say, "I'm going to the gym!" I sleep less, but feel more rested. It is helpful to have some friends on the diet with you, too. Two other collegues of mine are trying to watch what they eat, so it's easy for me to get support and encouragement.

That's my low-cal diet story.  I'll update you in two more weeks!"
