Fruits and vegetables provide vital nutrients, give your body the fiber it needs to function properly, and fills you up before you hit the potatoes or other denser calorie foods.

Try new fruits and vegetables. You'd be surprised what you'll discover. Did you ever eat a kiwi? They're marvelous with a lightly, sweet, strawberry flavor.

Just remember that bananas and avocados, while delicious and quite good for you, contain many more calories than their citrus, berry, and apple counterparts. Eat them in smaller portions.

A Low Calorie Diet Success Story
On 14 February 2004, we received the following story from S. in Doha:

"I am a 6'1", 57-year-old male. I have reduced my weight from 185 lbs to 160 lbs over six months. I eat everything, but only eat three times a day--breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I avoid snacking.

Before I eat, I serve my portions and survey what I'm going to eat. I then sit down before eating, deliberate about eating, and take my time while eating. If I eat at a restaurant, I typically reduce the portions served by half.

My only conscious effort at calorie control is that when hungry, I try and eat the fruits and vegetables first, and the protein and carbohydrates last. I opt for larger portions of carbohydrates and smaller portions of protein.

I allow myself a glass of wine with dinner, and avoid other alcohol except on nights out. I enjoy a dessert after my meal, and try to always be grateful before I eat.

My weight goal is not driven by anything except my waistline. It was 37 inches, it's now 33. My goal is 31."
