Blooming onions at some restaurants can run as high as 3,000 calories!  GASP!
This is a lower calorie version of the insanely rich 3,000 calorie restaurant onion flowers.

Because each person ends up with an entire flower, it makes a lovely presentation for barbecues and entertaining.

Serve with low-calorie ketchup or the new spray-on salad dressings like Italian or Balsamic vinaigrette, although these are mighty tasty without anything extra added.

Low fat and delicious
Grilled Onion Flowers
Ingredients
4 servings - 75 calories per serving
1g fat per serving
4 onions
1 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 tbsp brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/3 cup seasoned croutons (crushed)
  • Peel onions.
  • For each onion:
    • Cut 1/2-inch slice from the top of the onion
    • Cut into 8 wedges without cutting all the way through (creating a flower).
    • Gently open onion "petals."
    • Place on foil square brushed with olive oil.
  • Heat gas or charcoal grill.
  • In small bowl, blend vinegar, oregano, brown sugar, salt, and pepper.
  • Sprinkle mixture over onions.
  • Wrap foil securely around onions.
  • Place onions on grill 4 inches from medium heat.
  • Grill for 60 minutes.
  • Carefully remove from foil to serving plates.
  • Sprinkle with crushed croutons.
  • Serve while hot.
