Small white onions can be purchased peeled and ready to use in cans or jars.  Just be sure to buy ones that haven't been pickled!
These are a delicious appetizer and elegant enough for company.

These also work as a great side dish alongside pork roast, beef roast, or any steak.

Low fat and delicious
Ranch-Style White Onions
Ingredients
4 servings - 100 calories per serving
4g fat per serving
1 lb small white onions
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1/4 cup white wine
1/2 cup stewed tomatoes
3 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp red pepper sauce (Tabasco)
  • In a heavy saucepan, combine all ingredients except onions.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Boil for 10 minutes or until mixture thickens.
  • Trim and peel onions.
  • Place into boiling water.
  • Boil for 6 minutes.
  • Drain.
  • Place drained onions in saucepan mixture.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat.
  • Simmer over low heat for 15 minutes.
  • Serve while hot as a side dish or refrigerate and serve cold as a cocktail condiment.
