Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 11 July 2004, we received this note from J.B. of Florida, concerning their use of sucralose.
"Thank you for having this information up on your website. You have made clear the possibilities of intolerance by people to sucralose.

Florida seems to be a hotbed of product testing. A new product recently came on the market and we purchased it--Sunny D Sport Drink.

I am a Mom who monitors her children's diets. Neither of my kids are big juice drinkers. I specifically watch my daughter's diet as she reacts extremely to high levels of sugars, red dye, and sugar combinations. This great new drink only had 14 grams of sugars per 11.3 fluid ounce serving.  It is also enriched with Vitamin C, Niacin, B-6, and potassium.

Needless to say, I did not read the label for sucralose--bad Mommy. It seemed to be an answer to my children's additional fluid intake issues.

Since I purchased the drinks weeks ago, my 7-year old daughter has had occasional abdominal pain (gas like) as well as occasional diarrhea. My 5-year old son seems to have no side effects, in fact, he seems to be completely unaffected.

As with all things newly introduced, I am eliminating the drink altogether from her diet for the time being to see if her issues improve, and before I rush off to the doctor with a stool sample.

Thanks for the info and I'll keep you posted."

On 31 August 2004, we received an update from J.B.:

"Needless to say, elminating the Sunny D Sports Drink which contained sucralose seems to have completely eliminated my daughter's stomach cramps. In fact, after about two weeks without the product, my daughter's bowels returned to normal.  I now have thrown out any and all food and drink containing this substitute sweetener.

I did do a blind test three weeks after eliminating the drink from her diet. With another product containing a very small amount of sucrlose, much less than the sports drink, my daughter consumed this product at 6:00 p.m. By 9:00 p.m. she exhibited stomach cramping (light). The following day her bowels were loose again.  It only took less than a day for her to recover.

I just can't believe that with all the documentation of adverse reactions, that this product is still on the shelves and in every day products we use.  As for me, I will continue to read labels like a crazy person with every product my daughter ingests here at home.  I have taken to asking for content labels of any sweetened product we eat outsid our home, checking for sucralose.

As they say, "Buyer Beware!""
