Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 9 July 2004, we received this note from J.M. of South Lyon, MI, concerning their use of sucralose.
"I started using Splenda when I started a low-carb diet. Every morning, I would uswe it in my coffee. I probably average four cups of coffee in the morning before I leave my home.

Shortly after starting Splenda, I started experiencing migraines. The first one came for about four days, then a week break, then another one for about seven days, a few days break, then they came and didn't leave!

I was experiencing constant migraines every day. I felt that I wasn't under any more stress than usual, but I attributed the mirgraines to daily life stress.  I consulted a neurologist who ordered an extensive line of testing and drugs. He put me on antiseizure medication which worked for about a week to lessen the headaches, but, after the first week, it did no good. I was taking painkillers by the afternoon just to be able to function as a mom.

Test after tet showed nothing physically wrong with me. They ruled out tumors, blood clots, etc. I had MRIs, MRAs, etc. Nothing. I cried when talking to the doctor.  I cried almost every afternoon because the headaches got so bad.

After about two months of constant, every day migraines, I ran out of Splenda. Abuot the same time, my friend emailed me to tell me about her friend who had headaches caused by Splenda. At that point, all of my friends were trying to figure out what was causing the headaches, so I really didn't take much notice of the message.

I did, however, not buy any Splenda when it ran out. Within two weeks, the headaches gradually subsided and I have not had one in about three months. Were they caused by Splenda? I guess no one will be able to prove it, but I am certain that it is too much of a coincidence to be anything else.

I will inform my specialist and, hopefully, he will learn to add more questions to his initial routine of headache causes. I also find it ironic that when I typed in the words "headaches caused by Splenda" this morning on my search engine, the first page it pointed me to was Splenda's page on different kinds of headaches and possible causes--but it doesn't mention their product as a cause. I will be speaking to the customer service as soon as they open this morning.

Thanks for letting me share this story. Maybe I can save somebody the tortures that I endured from non-stop headaches that even a specialist in headaches couldn't cure!"
