Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 12 July 2004, we received this note from E.R. of New Orleans, LA, concerning their use of sucralose.
"I've never had a food allergy--at least not one whose symptoms were obvious to me. Also, I don't use a lot of artificial sweetener, but I was told that Splenda was "natural"--better for you than others. So, I got and used it twice in my evening smoothie for a little extra sweet.

Both nights I went to bed with a "caffeine headache." I knew I hadn't skipped any coffee, so I backtracked to see what I had done differently. The only thing was the Splenda. So, I didn't use it for about a month.

When I did, same thing--bad migraine-type symptoms. I didn't use it again because, after three uses and three headaches, I was convinced that it was not for me.

Then, a few months later while I was visiting Chicago, I bought a few cans of sugar-free soda by Hansen.  I had known Hansen to be a "health food" brand, so I figured it would be okay and interesting to try. Well, later that afternoon I got the worst version of the caffeine headache.  I thought it was a migraine! It was horrible! I have only had two migraines before and they were associated with TMJ, but I had not had one in ten years.

It never occured to me that I had ingested Splenda! Then, when driving back from Chicago, I decided to have one of the sugar-free sodas. While I was waiting for the foam to go down in the cup, I noticed that the can said it was "aspartame free." I wondered what they were using and, when I saw it was Splenda, I realized that the day of the migraine, I had the other can I had purchased.

No further evidence was needed to show me this product was bad for me. So, now I avoid Splenda like the plague! I've noticed that people are using it interchangeably with sugar because we are told it IS sugar. I am freaking because, as I said, I've never had a food allergy until now. Splenda is being used everywhere.  SCARY!"
