Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 2 September 2004, we received this note from A.E. concerning their use of sucralose.
"I have another Splenda horror story:

Recently I saw an advertisement for Pop Secret's microwaveable kettle corn popcorn. It sounded yummy to me, so I decided to buy some.  I popped up a bag for myself and my four-year old son.  My son ate most of the popcorn, but I did have a few bites. I noticed that it had a strange taste to it, but didn't really think about it too much. The next day, my son had terrible diarrhea (not a good thing for any young child -- but absolutely dangerous for a former preemie who only weighs 30 pounds at four years of age!!!). Of course, I didn't make the connection to the popcorn at that time.

A few days later, I decided to make the second bag of popcorn, which I ate myself. Again I noticed the strange taste and began wondering what was causing it. I began looking at the nutritional information on the popcorn box. The first thing that struck me was that it listed 0 grams of sugar. I found that hard to believe, seeing as it tasted very sweet.  Then I looked at the ingredients list and noticed sucralose listed as an ingredient. I became instantly suspicious after seeing that an artificial sweetener was used in this product. It certainly explained the strange taste that the popcorn had. I've never been into these low carb fad diets, and try to stay away from all the artificial sweeteners.

The next thing I knew, I was suffering from terrible stomach cramps, gas, bloating, nausea, and diarrhea. I was late for work this morning because I couldn't get off the toilet. The pain was so bad that I was actually screaming out (almost like childbirth!!).  It's been almost 24 hours since I ate the popcorn and I'm still having terrible stomach cramps.

I will NEVER EVER AGAIN purchase another product containing this horrible ingredient. I have since written to General Mills (makes of Pop Secret), Splenda, and the FDA with my complaints. I will never understand how something like this got on the market, but I believe it should be removed ASAP!! At the very least, products containing sucralose should have to display ENORMOUS lettering that sucralose has been used in the product. The really frightening thing to me is that unless you read all the ingredients of a product (which I plan to do from now on!!), you have no way of knowing that sucralose has been used. It seems that you're not really even given the choice as to whether you want to consume this nasty product or not. How the makers of sucralose and the FDA can claim that there are no known side effects from this products is beyond me. What a joke!"
