Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 31 August 2004, we received this note from T.W. of Yreka, CA, concerning their use of sucralose.
"I read your report on Splenda with great interest.  After discontinuing the use of all products containing aspartame--I suffered from horrible headaches, joint pain, and heart palpitations--consuming only one diet soda per day and sometimes sugarless gum--I wondered if Splenda might be the answer for me.

I went four months with no artificial sweetener of any kind and then started using a small amount of Splenda as a sweetener in my one cup of coffee per day, an occasional protein bar, and a couple of times each week on cereal or fruit. Within one week, the horrific headache was back and I even noticed heart palpitations again.

I immediately stopped and have been symptom free ever since. I have read of other people having similar negative experiences with first aspartame and then sucralose. I believe that once your body finally breaks down from one, it cannot tolerate the other either.

I have a friend who stopped using aspartame years ago after similar complaints.  A few months ago she drank one half of a can of soda and got very sick. Seems to be a common story.

Once your body is allergic, a very small amount cna trigger the illness again regardless of how long one has been without it. I just hope there is no residual damage or long-term negative effects from their usage after one has stopped. I hope the FDA wises up.  There are tends of thousands of people out there trying to get the FDA to do long-term studies on aspartame, hoping that they will take it off the market. I think the chemical companies who manufacture artificial sweeteners have too many lobbyists and too much money for the FDA to listen to the multitudes who have suffered."

Thank you T.W. for sharing your story with our visitors.
