Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 26 October 2004, we received this note from L.P. concerning their use of sucralose.
"I can't be certain that my symptoms were caused by the Spenda - but many of the other stories I read on this website correlate well to my own experience. I started on the South Beach diet about four months ago, elminated almost all of the natural sugar from my diet and exclusively used Splenda for sweetening. I dropped weight quickly but noticed that I was also sprialling into a state of depression and anxiety.

I tried web-searching about the possibility of weight loss causing depression but found little.

About two months ago I started to develop terrible pain and aching in my jaw muscles. I thought that I might be developing a case of TMJ. I cut way down on caffiene but that did not seem to help much. I did notice that when I skipped my bowl of morning oat bran (sweetened with Splenda) the symptoms were not nearly as pronounced. I have decided to eliminate the Splenda to see if these symptoms clear up.

What a pity. I thought I had found a way to have my cake and eat it too. I guess when something seems too good to be true - it usually is.
"

On 30 November 2004, we received an update from L.P. concerning her recovery:

"I wrote earlier about experiencing depression, anxiety, and jaw pain.  I had just stopped consuming Splenda when I wrote. Now, more than a month later, having completely eliminated Splenda, all of my symptoms have disappeared.

I had been seeing a counselor about the depression and anxiety and no longer feel the need.

I have zero jaw pain and I find that both the clarity of my thinking and my energy levels have noticeably increased. The bummer is that I now have no low-carb and calorie way (that I trust) to satisfy my sweet cravings, so I have packed on a few extra pounds as a result.

Oh well... small price to pay for the positive trade-offs."

Thank you L.P. for sharing your story with our visitors.
