On 20 October 2004, we received this note from H.C. of St. George, UT, concerning their use of sucralose.

"I've never written a letter like this before, but I thought I had better make a statement, as well. I was so excited that I had found a sweetner that wasn't toxic and I could have it in my herbal teas and make muffins and cakes because I have hypoglycemia. I researched Splenda to see if there were any bad side effects because I didn't want to poison my body. I have used Splenda faithfully for over a year now and I didn't believe I had been suffering any ill effects until recently.
I am a technical writer and instructional designer by profession. I do my work at home in the day while my children are gone to school and sometimes I even work at night when the kids go to bed. I noticed in the last couple of months that by about 10:30 a.m. I would become extremely tired and could not concentrate and I would get cranky and not be able to do any work. By the time evening came around I would have to go to my room to keep from yelling at my kids and working was about impossible. My head was dulled and it felt like someone had socked me in the back of the eyes. I had never really experienced it before. I thought it was just eye strain so I stopped sitting in front of the computer for about 5 days and it seemed to get worse, along with my head being so heavy and foggy. I thought it was so strange because it wasn't exactly what I would call a headache, because I had experience migraines before and stress headaches--but it was like none other and continuously clouded around me. I noticed I was becoming more emotional, too.
I noticed some stomach pains arising in my stomach that usually only happened when I ate something I was allergic to, such as peanuts and whey protein. That's when I began checking everything I was eating to see if I was intaking something stupid that I had overlooked. Then my mother just by chance mentioned an article she had read about some ill effects and toxicity of Splenda. I thought she was crazy. I violently wanted to deny it...don't take my Splenda away. But as I continued to feel worse, it brought me back to researching and experimenting without it.
The first day I felt a little better without it and so on until two weeks passed and I didn't have any more eye pain and stomach pain and my head felt very clear again and my energy was almost full blast. I didn't really dare take any more Splenda, but I was in a rush yesterday and hungry and I didn't want a hypoglycemic reaction so I grabbed one of my Quaker low carb granola bars that I love. By the afternoon I was extremely drowsy and I napped for a while. Today I had another one out of habbit. My head is back to the fog and I was socked in my eyes again. I'm convinced it's the Splenda. I hate feeling this way. I'm back to completely whole foods again. Thanks for this site."
On 25 October 2004, we received an update from H.C.:
"I have always checked labels and I know every product I have in my home that contains Splenda and sucralose.
Update. I've been off sucralose for over 3 weeks and have lost about 5 pounds without trying. I had gained weight in the last few months and couldn't understand why. I attribute it to the sucralose again. I am also so much more sharp in my thinking. Thanks!"
Thank you H.C. for sharing your story with our visitors.
