Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 14 October 2004, we received this note from D.A. of Astoria, NY, concerning their use of sucralose.
"Full disclosure: I'm not an employee of Splenda (or Kraft Foods), but it is one of my clients. However I began using Splenda for about two months before the company became a client.

I am a moderate coffee drinker who has been using Splenda daily for 3 months without any noticeable side-effects. For years I've refused to use artificial sweetners mainly because of the aftertaste, but I immediately fell in love with Splenda when I tried it. One packet in my coffee is sufficient, for about 3-4 cups a day is my daily Splenda intake. I find that I have more energy (less sugar crashes) throughout the day, and that I've been able to reduce my overall sugar intake, which is typically high since I have quite a sweet tooth.

And like I said, no problems. Splenda is a wonderful sugar substitute that I plan on continuing to use.

As to the negative reviews, I can't help but wonder what else is going on that these people don't mention, such as what they're eating, whether they exercise, daily Splenda consumption, and so forth. For instance, someone here wrote that they put 3 packets in their tea. Isn't that overdoing it? According to Splenda's website: "Each packet provides the sweetness of two teaspoons of sugar."

Others mentioned that they are on the Atkins diets; in my opinion Atkins diets are unhealthy, nutritionally deficient and dangerous.

Although I'm far from being in perfect shape, I make it a point to eat a very balanced diet: mostly lean meats, raw or par-boiled vegetables and fruit. I go minimal on breads, pastas, and dairy, and eat nearly no fried foods, fast food or soda. I also exercise when I can, and don't consume any alcohol. My chief food "vices" are chocolate and pizza.

Really what anyone experiencing ill-effects should do -- as you correctly recommend on your site -- is consult with a physician or nutritionist.
"
