| On 4 October 2004, we received this note from P.C. concerning their use of sucralose. |
"I have been using Splenda for a long time now. I'm not really sure exactly when I started. I was using NutraSweet and heard about all of the problems people were having with it, so when the Atkins Diet recommended Splenda I started using it instead. I use 4 packets a day in my coffee and I eat and drink many products that contain Sucralose. The one I use the most is Diet Rite soda. I drink from 1 to 3 cans a day.
I have been experiencing severe diarrhea on and off for a long time. There are times I don't make it to the bathroom. I went to a doctor a few months ago because I had been experiencing diarrhea for a week and it would not go away. She ran some tests and didn't find anything. She wanted to send me for a lower GI, but I never made the appointment because the diarrhea lessoned some and it was going to take 3 months to get an appointment. I had my first migraine a couple of years ago and have had three all together over the last two years. I am very moody and easily irritated. I have hot flashes and then I'm suddenly cold and can't get warm. My memory has gotten really bad. I can't remember things that are very important to me, like my grand daughters are coming to visit. I often feel kind of disorientated and spacey. And the hardest part is how tired I am. I don't feel like I sleep soundly at night and I often feel like I could just lay down on the floor of my office and take a nap. I've had my husband sleep on the couch for months now because I just don't feel like I'm sleeping soundly. I have a really hard time waking up in the morning too. I've described to others that I feel drugged. When I get home from work, most nights, I go right to my room and fall into bed. I just don't have the energy to function. One last point... I don't seem to be able to loose weight. Even though I'm not over eating and pretty much sticking to the Atkins Diet. When I've gone on the Atkins eating plan other times in my life, I've lost weight and I've lost it quickly. I've noticed since last year that no matter how hard I try, I'm just not loosing weight. And when I stopped Atkins for a month, I gained 10 pounds and I wasn't over eating.
Because you don't know me, you have no way of knowing that I used to have the kind of memory that people envied. When I went grocery shopping, I never took a list. I just remember what I needed. When I had errands to run, I mapped out in my mind the route I would take and I went on my errand. Now, I get home and I've forgotten several of the things I needed to do and even with a list, I miss things I went to buy.
I am 46 years old, so I assumed aging was the cause of my problems. But, I was getting worried so I've gone to see several doctors. I was told I was pre-menopausal as a result of a hysterectomy I had 11 years ago. One doctor put me on Estrogen, which made my symptoms worse. Another has put me on a Progesterone cream, which does seem to be helping some of the symptoms. But, the last time I went to see her, she said she was concerned about how tired I am so she is sending me for blood tests.
This morning the diarrhea was really bad. I knew that there was some sweetener in low carb candy that could cause diarrhea, so I decided to look on the net and see if there was any information available, which is how I found this site. Sucralose was the one thing I found in each of the food and drink products I have in my office. I read just about all of the 'Splenda Stories' on your site and I'm stunned to see how many of the symptoms I share!
It is possible that I'm really just pre-menopausal and I'm going through the aging process. It could just be a coincidence that I have all of the symptoms your other Splenda user have, but I'm going to stop using Splenda and all of the products that contain Sucralose for a month and then I will post another 'Splenda Story' and let you know how I'm doing.
Thanks for the information.
P.S.: One other thing I've noted lately is that I find myself craving something, but I can't put my figure on what. It's similar to the deep CRAVING I felt when I first stopped smoking 7 year ago, but I don't know what I'm craving. I'm not hungry, I'm not thirsty, but I need something. Have any of your other Splenda Story tellers complained of this feeling?
P.P.S.: My husband asked me last night if any of your people have reported heart symptoms of any kinds and reminded me of the palpitation I've been experiencing. Some time ago, I began having the feeling that my heart was racing a hundred miles an hour. It not really painful, but it feels like I've had 5 cups of coffee or something. The only other time I remember having this feeling is when I used diet pills. Could this be related to the Splenda also?
Thanks again."
