Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 4 April 2005, we received this note from C.M. concerning their use of sucralose.
"I used Splenda only a few times. The first time, I drank hot chocolate made from a mix that contained Splenda.  I felt really nauseated afterward, with a severe sour stomach. Then, my husband and I made hot toddies with lemon juice.  I put Splenda in mine, but he didn't sweeten his. I felt terrible! Achy, nauseated, unable to concentrate. My husband was fine. Still, I didn't make the connection.

About a week later, I heavily sweetened a bowl of oatmeal with Splenda for a quick evening meal (so I wouldn't have to cook). I woke up in the wee hours REALLY sick--vomiting and diarrhea for two days, bloating and gas, headache, severe depression and suicidal thoughts, aches all over, but no fever, so it wasn't flue. I had an irregular heartbeat and was very dizzy. I felt like I was outside my body, sort of spaced out. I became so weak that I had to lie down on the floor near the toilet because I didn't have the strength to crawl back to bed. Diarrhea and vomiting at the same time is not fun--my husband ran to the kitchen and got a big plastic container for me to throw up in.

When I got a little better, I started trying to pinpoint the commonalities in the times I felt bad and I came up with only one: Splenda.

I honestly believe this stuff is poison. It may not affect everyone as strongly as it does some, but I think if it is used regularly, the effects will accumulate, perhaps so gradually that a person will not realize why he feels so badly. Maybe I was lucky in a way to be so sensitive to it. I know for sure not to ever consume it again!!"

Thank you C.M. for sharing your story with our visitors.
