Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 7 April 2005, we received this note from H.G. concerning their use of sucralose.
"Good evening. I just found your website by accident and felt I had to write.

Today, April 7, 2005, I almost dialed 9-1-1 from the side of the road as I sat in my car on the way to work. Earlier in the morning, I awoke to severe gas.  I am talking severe--as in having to pass gas about every 45 seconds or so for two or three hours straight!

I had been drinking iced tea for the past few days and using about 4-5 packets of Splenda in every glass. I would say, over the last three days, I have probably consumed 2-3 gallons of homemade iced tea.

Well, me and my wife decided to go for a walk before heading off to work. She packed a water bottle, and I packed a bottle of lemonade with two packets of Splenda added. The gas got worse and worse. I had to leave for work a few hours later, so I made a glass of tea and added my usual 4 packets of Splenda. I felt I should take some gas relief pills so as not to worry about this problem at work. Obviously, I swallowed the pills using this tea made with Splenda.

About halfway on my 23-mile trip to work, I noticed my passing gas had slowed quite a bit, but my stomach started swelling huge-like and cramping began. By the time I got to work, I was almost crying. I told my workers that I was really sick and had to go home. I honestly thought my stomach was going to split open.

I took a route that passes by a hospital--just in case. After I passed the hospital and was five miles from home, I had to pull over and turn off the car. I could no longer drive or even see the road from the crying and yelling out in pain. After about 10 minutes on the side of the road, I dialed 9-1-1 on my cellphone and was seconds from hitting the send button.  I honestly thought my stomach or intestines were going to rupture.

I got out of the car and tried to induce vomiting to take some of the pressure out of my stomach. I must have been successful enough to allow me to finally get home. Here I am now, five hours later, feeling much better, but still bloated and gassy.

I decided to use this evening to do some research on the net regarding extreme bloating. It was then that I found this website. I hope others see this post and recognize the dangers should you have an allergic reaction like the one I had."

Thank you H.G. for sharing your story with our visitors.
