Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 5 February 2004, we received this note from L.E., concerning her use of sucralose.
"My husband decided to start the Atkins diet yesterday. Even though I'm not overweight, I decided that I would do it with him for the first couple of weeks to make it easier on him.

My biggest concern was finding a substitute for sugar, as I highly despise Nutrasweet, Sweet-n-Low, Equal, and basically any of the artificial sweeteners I've tried in the past. Ever since these sweeteners became increasingly popular 15 to 20 years ago, I've always avoided them. Just one can of "diet soda" would give me a severe headache. I'd feel lightheaded, dizzy, and just "not right."

The Atkins diet claimed that Splenda was different. "It's derived from regular sugar," they said. Even though I've had such bad experiences with other artificial sweeteners, I gave Splenda the benefit of the doubt.

Last night I went out and stocked up on Diet Rite. I had one can right before I went to bed. After waking up this morning, I felt nauseated, lightheaded, dizzy, and had a strange weak sensation in my muscles. That is why I am sitting home today writing this e-mail. I felt so terrible that I was not even able to go to work.

My conculsion, Splenda is even worse than the other artificial sweeteners!

I have shared my experiences with my family, friends, and co-workers for several years. Unfortunately, it falls on deaf ears. I've always said that I was just "allergic" to artificial sweeteners. But I have a hard time believing this is true.  I am convinced that artificial sweeteners are toxic to everyone, some people are just more sensitve to the toxicity than others.

If there is some petition out there to the FDA to stop the production of these sweeteners out there, I would be more than happy to sign it."
