"I'm still in awe of my experience. For the last week and a half, I have been feeling nauseated all day. My stomach has been bloated and as tired as I felt, I have not had restful sleep. I have been irritable and clumsy, somewhat depressed, and have experienced more cravings for sweets than normal.
I attributed some of my symptoms to a virus--I had a cold--and I thought they would go away. As the cold got better and these symptoms did not subside, I began to think my thyroid was out of whack. I am hypothyroid.
Yesterday, while complaining to my husband on the phone that something was wrong and I'm not myself, I opened an e-mail from my brother with an article about sucralose. As I read it to my husband, I wondered if one packet in my morning coffee was enough to cause me all these side effects.
I had only been using it for--you guessed it!--about ten days! He then informed me that he has been putting two packets in my coffee every morning.
I did not use Splenda this morning and have felt much better all day. Furthermore, I have shared this information with as many people as possible in a 24-hour period, and several friends have been experiencing similar symptoms.
I am so thoroughly outraged that this product is allowed on the market and is supported by several popular diets that I feel something must be done."
On 4 February 2004, we received an update from J.A.:
"After having no Splenda yesterday, my nausea has subsided and I slept very well. I still have some bloating and abdominal discomfort."
Thank you J.A. for sharing your story with our visitors.
