Splenda - the sugar substitute you need to be wary about
On 28 March 2004, we received this note from P.M. of Dalton, NH, concerning her use of sucralose.
"I am trying to eat better. I noticed I was having trouble with milk and wheat. I removed them from my diet and was feeling really well for a change.

Then a friend told me to try Splenda because I was telling her that I wanted to cut down on sugar, too. At first, when I used a small amount in my tea, I felt alright. Then I increased it because the package says to use the same amount as sugar. Within 15 minutes of ingesting the tea my stomach felt horrible--gas, pain, upset.

The first day I increased it I got a migraine that lasted all night. I do not get migraines! Nothing but ice took some of the pain away. I wondered what in the world was wrong with me.

I noticed that every time I drank tea with Splenda in it, I felt ill.  I started to put it together a few days ago. I am still feeling terrible. I felt "out of it" and kept bumping my head yesterday. I was just "acting out of it."

I am glad that I found your site. I hope I will be feeling better soon. I have been so sick! I am so mad about this so-called safe sugar substitute!"

On 29 March 2004, we received this update:

"Still recovering from Splenda. Still feel kind of "out of it." I wake up and go back to bed until 2 p.m. This is not me! When I wake up, I still feel dizzy and weak. My stomach is still crampy and I still have small stabbing pains in my intestines off and on.

I can't do hardly any housework because I'm still too weak and "fuzzy brained." Nice stuff... NOT!

My husband is worried about me. I am a bit hypoglycemic at times. I wonder if this stuff gave me some kind of attack... I've only been able to eat very small portions of food.

Oh, well. C'est la vie..."

On 30 March 2004, we received another update:

"Just wanted to let you know that I had a much better day today.  Getting my strength back and was able to eat without getting terrible cramps. Thanks for your site and your kind words."
