On 21 June 2004, we received this note from M.N. of Madison, WI, concerning their use of sucralose.

"Dear Folks, I happily will pass my experience on to you about Splenda. Last year I started to use Splenda thinking "finally a sweetener I could use that wouldn't be harmful like aspartame & saccharin and with few calories or carbs."
I used it for about 6 months daily in my decaf coffee drinks. I used about 3 per 16 oz. coffee drink. Also, if I brewed coffee at home I used it there, too. Well, I started having trouble staying asleep at night. Waking up several times and not able to go back to sleep easily. Than I started to have extremely depressive thoughts. Like feeling very strongly I was the only one in the universe and no one cared anywhere whether I lived or died. I mean just bizzare feelings of hopelessness and loneliness would come over me. I experienced this most noticeably when I was trying to go to sleep or back to sleep. Very creepy. It was definitely like it was a part of who I was.
I finally started to analyze when it all started and realized the main thing different in my life was using Splenda. I quit using it and immediately stopped having all such thoughts and feelings. I have not had such an episode since.
I would not take the product again and can only imagine what it is doing to the children being marketed heavily. I since have talked to others about the product and some of them have told me they too were experiencing depression and insomnia. They were going to stop taking it and see what happened.
I don't know the outcome as they were not people I really knew."
