Support groups can be a great benefit when dieting, getting in shape, or maintaining a healthy weight.
If you're not the "joining in" type, you can still get help. Buddy up with a co-worker, another mom or dad, a person from your church or trade association.

You'd be surprised how much more fun a workout is with a friend. It is also much easier to pass up that Cinnabon and double mocha coffee when you can text or call a friend and talk through the craving.

Reach out. Join in or meet up. Just find the support system that works for you and get to work.

Support groups - get thin with a little help from some friends
There is no reason to try to go it alone. There are so many choices for getting support while dieting. You can do it one-on-one with a counselor or diet buddy. You can do it on the Internet with support chatrooms, forums, and e-mails. You can do it in groups with meetings held regularly in your area.

Support groups for dieters are similar in many ways to the AA meetings attended by recovering alcoholics. The groups offer support, advice, success stories, and motivation. These groups, whether in person or on the Internet, provide dieters with a group setting to discuss their fears, hopes, goals, successes, failures, and help other dieters overcome their problems.

There are many programs out there. Some are just support groups. Others are diet programs packaged with support. Still others are just open forums where you are only a part of the group when you choose to sign-in.

No matter what route you take, try dieting with someone. If you like the group atmosphere and the comraderie that it provides, then, by all means, seek out a diet support group.

Some support groups for you to try:

  • e-Diets - online dieting, support, and fitness help
  • Weight Watchers - offering in person and online diet help and support groups
  • Overeaters Anonymous - using a 12-step program, OA helps members through local and online meetings at no cost to the members

There are other groups both online and offline. If none of the suggested groups are right for you, just do a quick search (try Google) and find something that works for you. There are hundreds of support forums and chatrooms. Just remember that your chances for diet success are higher with support--so find a group or buddy and start losing weight.
