Fruits and vegetables are rich in many of the nutrients you need every day.
Before starting any supplement program, speak with your doctor to find out what you need and what combinations of vitamins and minerals will work best for you.

Also, remember to tell your doctor about any vitamin or mineral supplement you are taking as some interfere with the effectiveness of prescribed medications.

Vitamins - what they are and how they work
Vitamins are necessary nutrients taken in through our diet and by taking supplements. Vitamins are components and building blocks for proper health. The body cannot manufacture vitamins on its own. All vitamins must be taken in from the outside.

There are two main types of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins are easily absorbed by the body but are flushed out when in abundance. Fat soluble vitamins require fat in the diet and bloodstream to be properly used by the body. Fat soluble vitamins can be taken in amounts too high for the body. The excess is stored in fat in the body and in fatty organs in the body where they can reach dangerous levels. However, knowing what vitamins you need, what they do, and how much you require should eliminate any problems with vitamin overdosing.

Keep in mind that a healthy, well-balanced diet eliminates the need for supplements. However, with today's restricted diets, it is impossible to take in all of the nutrients you need without taking some type of supplements. Knowing what you get from your diet and what you still need through supplements can make the difference between good health and health problems.

To help you get started, we have added various calorie counts for foods and beverages containing each nutrient. We also added a recipe containing the food item when possible, just to get you going. So, go through each nutrient to discover what they do, how they help, what they contribute to your overall health, and see if you can incorporate nutrient-rich foods and beverages into your diet.
