Splenda Chat

Coming soon... a Splenda chatroom where you discuss the benefits and drawbacks of sucralose consumption with other Splenda users.

On 26 June 2005, we received this note from K.P. in Puyallup, WA, concerning their use of sucralose.
"Hello.

I, too, have become very ill after consuming Splenda. For the last two weeks, on my doctor's recommendation, I have been following the guidelines of the South Beach Diet which, I agree, is a healthier way to eat. In doing so, I purchased Slim Fast meal shakes which have no sugar but are sweetened with Splenda. I also have been consuming Crystal Lite which also has Splenda in it.

Shortly after drinking the Slim Fast in the morning for breakfast four days ago, I experienced nausea which, during the course of the day, became severe stomach pain. Later in the day, I drank Crystal Lite in place of water and the stomach pain continued. By evening, I was in agony and was worried my kidneys were in danger as I had excrutiating back pain, as well.

The next day, I still had not made a connection to Splenda and repeated the same menu. I continued to experience the extreme stomach and back pains. Finally, I thought about what I was consuming and decided I would not drink the Slim Fast in teh morning.

I checked for Splenda side effects on the internet this morning and found your website--and many others--concerning the problems with Splenda and acesulfame-K. Right now, it is 6:25 p.m. and I feel fine.  I had some nausea earlier in the day, but ate some chicken noodle soup which helped and I feel so much better.

I also have been experiencing severe sweating and feeling hot shortly after consuming Splenda. It would last two or three hours and subside until I consumed more sucralose.

Yesterday, my husband experienced gas, diarrhea, and upset stomach all day after consuming a Body for Life shake and breakfast snacks sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame-K. So, it is not my imagination. These artificial sweeteners are making people sick. I am thankful I was able to figure out the problem after only four days of illness instead of several months as others have had to endure.

I will never use Splenda again and will carefully read food labels looking for sucralose and acesulfame-K.  I don't seem to have any problems with Equal, of which I only use one packet to sweeten a cup of tea. Thank you very much for your informative website. I hope the FDA will listen to us soon."

Thank you K.P. for sharing your story with our visitors.

If you have experienced any side effects, whether you are sure it is Splenda or not, be sure to speak with your physician and discuss all possibilities.
