Splenda Chat

Coming soon... a Splenda chatroom where you discuss the benefits and drawbacks of sucralose consumption with other Splenda users.

On 14 August 2005, we received this note from H. concerning their use of sucralose.
"I have spent the last 8 months trying to find out what has been causing my intestinal gas and very soft stools. Four days ago I finally found that the Splenda (sucralose) in my one can of soda a day was the culprit.

I was sure, 8 months ago, that I had some intestinal flu. I had fowl flatulence and near diarrhea. When it did not go away I went to a general practitioner. He gave me a stomach relaxer (Dicyclomine). They helped but the problem persisted. He then gave me acid inhibitors (Aciphex/Rabaprazole Sodium) thinking I had pre-ulcer conditions. They helped but the problem persisted. I decided to see a gastroenterologist thinking the ulcer condition was the problem. He did a upper-GI (camera in the stomach) and found nothing. He thought that I had a lactose intolerance. I quit eating any dairy products. It helped but the problem persisted. I did the same with wheat, the problem persisted. I was down to eating nothing but rice cakes and the problem persisted. By that time I had started having other problems such as anxiety and depression, trouble sleeping, hives and itchy skin, and inflammation of the inner lining of the skin in my mouth. On the day that I finally realized the cause I had a bad headache and swollen lips and eyes.

Looking back it seems so obvious but since I did not have large doses and there were stretches when I did not drink the soda, it made it all that much harder to pin point splenda. There was also a time when the manufacturer of the soda used Nutra-sweet switching to Splenda only a year and a half ago. The change did not seem all that important to me, not that I had even noticed. It has been four days and I feel much better. I praise Christ my Lord for helping me during the tough time and in finding the cause of my problem.

I write this hoping that it will help others, as others who have wrote helped me. I don't think spenda is dangerous or poison. It should not be banned. Unfortunately I have an allergy as many people have allergies to many natural substances. I'm very thankful today and I am enjoying dairy and my fresh baked bread once again! "

Thank you H. for sharing your story with our visitors.

If you have experienced any side effects, whether you are sure it is Splenda or not, be sure to speak with your physician and discuss all possibilities.
