| On 29 November 2005, we received this note from M.J. of Knoxville, TN, concerning their use of sucralose. |

| "I began using Splenda on Halloween. I remember the date because I purchased Halloween candy on the way home from work and also tried a new diet drink containing Splenda. I don't usually drink diet drinks because of the taste and, on impulse, decided to try one with the new sweetener.
Within a few days, I started feeling shaky at work. My tongue would get a tingly feeling. I was feeling just slightly light headed, with a slight nagging headache. Actually, I thought I was coming down with something. I also noticed that I only felt this way at work, prompting me to think that the air conditioning or heating system was causing me to feel this way. The symptoms got worse to the point that I was feeling panicky with slight anxiety feelings. I've never had anxiety attacks so I'm not sure how they feel, but what I was feeling was something like a worsening of the dizzy, light headedness, a worsening of the tingling of the tip of my tongue, the headache wasn't really worsening, just nagging, and now a feeling similar in the chest area as when you are scared or frightened. I'm not on any medications. I'm a healthy person who only suffers the occasional sinus headache, and I hadn't changed anything in my diet or my routine other than the Splenda. So, after using it for less than two weeks, I stopped using it altogether and looked up websites about any possible side effects. I've not used Splenda in two days and I am feeling back to normal. Actually, since I brought the 12 pack to work, I can look back and recall that my symptoms did subside when I returned home and didn't ingest anymore Splenda for the day. I'm not sure why I had the reaction. I do know that I am allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs. Penicillin causes me to break out in a rash, my fever shoots up, and my body starts to swell. I haven't been in contact with it since childhood. Sulfa drugs make me feel generally ill, dizzy, headaches, nausea, heart racing, etc. I would compare my reaction to Splenda more the same as my reaction to sulfa drugs. I noticed in one of the stories I read on the internet that a few other people allergic to sulfa drugs had a reaction to Splenda similar to a drug allergy. Could possibly Splenda mimic drug allergies in people sensitive to Sulfa drugs?" Thank you M.J. for sharing your story with our visitors. |
