Splenda Chat

Coming soon... a Splenda chatroom where you discuss the benefits and drawbacks of sucralose consumption with other Splenda users.

On 20 February 2006, we received this note from A.P. concerning their use of sucralose.
"My doctor put me on a low-carb/sugar-free diet to lose weight and regulate my blood sugar. So, hearing the very false, but convincing, advertisements for Splenda, I chose it as my substitute. My husband began using it with me.

I began to have blisters and white bumps on my throat. It felt like I had Strep throat. I made a doctor's appointment to be tested, but it was not Strep. I began to notice that my throat and the inside of my mouth would burn after I had a hard candy, a soda, a cup of coffee, a bit of ice cream, or anything sweetened with Splenda.

My husband was having constant nausea and diarrhea and his stool was a light tan color. We began to worry.

I looked up the ingredients of Splenda on the Internet and learned about the chlorination. I am allergic to chlorine.  This explained the blisters in my mouth.

My husband and I stopped using Splenda and all of our symptoms went away in a few days.  That was about two months ago.

This past Friday, we went to eat at a local restaurant and they had sugar-free apple pie and sugar-free whipped cream on the dessert bar. I got a piece and, after taking a few bites, the inside of my mouth and throat began to burn. I called the waitress over and asked what the pie was sweetened with. It was Splenda.

The waitress then shared with me that her elderly mother had been diagnosed as a diabetic about seven months ago and began using Splenda for a sugar substitute. She had been complaining of a sore throat and blisters on her lips and inside her mouth. She told me she couldn't wait to call her mother and tell her to stop using the Splenda to see if it was causing her problems.

Splenda is not good and there is no telling what it is doing to people."

Thank you A.P. for sharing your story with our visitors.

If you have experienced any side effects, whether you are sure it is Splenda or not, be sure to speak with your physician and discuss all possibilities.
