Splenda Chat

Coming soon... a Splenda chatroom where you discuss the benefits and drawbacks of sucralose consumption with other Splenda users.

On 26 April 2006, we received this note from S.R. concerning their use of sucralose.
"I have been ingesting Splenda in prepared foods for quite some time without side effects.

Two days ago, I decided to limit my calorie intake and I purchased some cookies and ice cream sweetened with Splenda.  This would replace my regular cookies and ice cream.

Last night, I had a bowl of ice cream with the Splenda sweetener. Earlier in the day, I had some cookies after my lunch. About 1:00 a.m., I woke up with chest pain and pounding in my ears. I was worried about a heart attack for about two hours.

After a couple of hours, it seemed to have "moved" down to my stomach, which had a "tightening" feeling. After about 30 minutes, it turned into abdominal cramping. I was completely back to normal by 5:00 a.m.

So, my theory on Splenda is that it may not cause any side effects with occasional use, but used as your sole sweetener, you may feel you're having a heart attack. Pretty scary for a 56-year old in the middle of the night!

I promptly looked it up on the Internet when I got up and found it to be a common reaction to Splenda. It may be common, but is it safe?

I hope this helps someone else from the scare."

Thank you S.R. for sharing your story with our visitors.

If you have experienced any side effects, whether you are sure it is Splenda or not, be sure to speak with your physician and discuss all possibilities.
