On 30 June 2006, we received this note from G.M.J. of Chicago, Illinois, concerning their use of sucralose.
"A while ago, in order to cut calories, I decided to start doing the sugar-free thing. I'd seen all the Splenda advertising and thought it sounded like a miracle, so I bought a box of Splenda packets and started using them in my tea instead of sugar. I also got a slew of sugar-free products sweetened with Splenda. I bought jam, water, soy milk, Crystal Lite. Essentially, everything I drank had Splenda in it.

For a while, I was fine. Then I began experiencing shortness of breath and difficulty taking a deep breath. At first it was only when I worked out, but then I had trouble taking a deep breath when I was just sitting around.  I thought maybe it was late-onset smoking effects even though I quit smoking over six months ago. I also started having weird spells of nausea. Very randomly throughout the day, I would feel STRONGLY like I was going to throw up and a couple of times I actually did. The final straw, though, was the insomnia. I cherish my sleep and when I laid down to go to sleep three nights in a row and tossed and turned for hours and hours, unable to fall asleep, I'd really had it.

I immediately suspected Splenda as the cause of my insomnia because I was already rather uncomfortable with the amount I was ingesting, regardless of the fact that everyone raved about how safe it was. I spent my third night of insomnia online doing research. The amount of Splenda horror stories I found absolutely shocked me. I immediately decided to eliminate all sucralose from my diet. The next day, I threw away all the food we had that contained Splenda.

Within two days I was able to sleep normally again. My nausea went away. A few days later I was no longer experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty taking deep breaths. I am amazed at the turnaround and I can't believe that an artificial sweetener could do that to me."

Thank you G.M.J. for sharing your story with our visitors.

If you have experienced any side effects, whether you are sure it is Splenda or not, be sure to speak with your physician and discuss all possibilities.
